Un film étonnant de Hal Ashby qui évoque l'histoire d'amour entre un adolescent fasciné par la mort et une vieille dame espiègle de 79 ans.
 
Le film a été interdit au moins de 12 ans à sa sortie en 1971, sans qu'on sache si c'est à cause  de l'humour morbide du jeune garçon ou de la forte différence d'âge des deux protagonistes ou peut-être bien les deux.

Les tentatives de suicide ratées d'Harold sont drôles et caustiques :
 il ne semble éprouver ni tristesse, ni angoisse face à la mort.
Pourtant le film est d'un incroyable optimisme définitivement tourné vers l'amour et la vie.

Il apparaît plus que nécessaire de mentionner la bande-son géniale de Cat Stevens...
